Answers

Q: Do I have to use all of the features of the Tapjoy library?

A: No, you can use any subset of features that you wish. You might only use ad optimization, or you might only purchase Pay-Per-Install, or you might only use high scores. It’s completely up to you.

Q: How can Tapjoy SDK help me make money?

A: We can help you make money in several ways:
1. Give you the best, highest eCPM ads by querying all the ad networks.
2. Help you build your app’s customer base through Pay-Per-Install.
3. Let you sell virtual goods / virtual currency within your app.

Q:How does ad optimization work? Why do I need it?

A: We sign you up for six different ad networks automatically. Every time we serve an ad, we look at how much each ad network is paying (eCPM, or effective cost per thousand impressions), and choose the one that has the highest eCPM. Because this is done real time. For more information, see: www.tapjoy.com/blog.

Q: Do I need to sign up for accounts for each network separately to use the ad optimizer?

A: For the most part, we sign you up with each ad network automatically. However there are some ad networks that require you to sign up at their website; however if they are one of our supported ad networks you do not need to include their SDK separately – you can just call our ad optimizer.

Q: Does Tapjoy take some of my ad revenue when I optimize?

A: No. In some cases, Tapjoy has deals with the ad networks to get a percentage of their cut. The amount you get paid by a given ad network does not change. However, your total revenue goes up because we help you switch between the ad networks.

Q: Will including the Tapjoy SDK increase my application size too much?

A: No. Although the download contains several versions of the SDK, the actual compiled version of the product only increases your application size by 500K. This is despite the fact that we are including SDK’s from multiple ad vendors and our own functionality within this library.

Q: Do I need a server to make all this work?

A: No. We estimate that 90% of all iphone games do not have a server component. Tapjoy has a robust server infrastructure and we are using it to help you by adding server-side high scores, virtual currency/goods tracking, Pay-Per-Install tracking, and more.

Q: What is an offer?

A: An offer is usually an action that the user has to take on behalf of some advertiser. An offer could be to go install another iphone app, or it could be to fill out a survey, sign up for a free trial, or purchase a subscription to a DVD service like Netflix. In the advertising world, offers are usually referred to as CPA, Cost Per Action or Cost Per Acquisition.

Q: What is a virtual good? Virtual currency?

A: A virtual good is something inside your game which you give to users only if they meet certain conditions. For example, a sword in a fantasy game, a tower in a tower defense game, or a gun in a mafia/crime oriented game, or articles of clothing in an avatar-based game.

A virtual currency is any point system you use within your game. For example, gold coins, poker chips, favor points, life points, etc. Anything which you can track, has a limited supply (from the end users point of view), and has a balance that can go up (or down) upon taking certain actions in the game is a virtual currency.

Q: How does Tapjoy help me make money with virtual goods or virtual currencies?

A: You can add virtual goods into your game, and users will have to either pay (using in-app payments for paid apps) or fill out offers (using our list of offers from Offerpal). Once an offer has been completed and verified, the advertiser will pay us and we pay you. You can then credit the user with the virtual good or currency.

Tapjoy is also introducing a virtual goods hosting service, so that you don't need a server to do any kind of virtual goods storage (keeping track of who has what item) and to use in-app payments which requires a server.

Q: How do I Pay-Per-Install? Does it work? Can it get my app into the top 25?

A: Tapjoy offers a new concept in application promotion - the Pay-Per-Install. You decide how much you want to pay per install. This is different from cross-promotion and different from the pay-per-click model that is offered by certain ad networks. What's most exciting about this is that we advertise your app across our network of games on mobile and through offerpal's network on facebook, myspace.

Q: Why is a Pay-Per-Install better than other promotion options?

A: Users are given a reward when they install - a virtual good or virtual currency points. These are great incentives for users to click on your apps - they are much more effective than a simple ad or cross promotion.
Moreover, Pay-Per-Install are ROI positive, particularly for paid apps - and there is no limit to how many users we can drive to you. More on this in our blog (www.tapjoy.com/blog).
